Tool & Die Maker

Staff Management | SMX is currently hiring for an exciting Direct Hire Opportunity for 2nd and 3rd shift Tool & Die Makers for our client at their busy manufacturing facility in Skokie, IL .

  • 2nd shift = 2:30pm-11pm

  • 3rd shift = 10:30pm-7am

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Build, repair, and maintain stamping tools.

  • Perform major rebuilds, sharpen, and repair blanking dies.

  • Troubleshoot press and die problems in production environment.

  • Run all conventional Tool Room machine tools and possess personal tools and gages necessary to perform tasks.

  • Follow all safety policies and suggest improvements to existing processes and procedures.


  • TMA graduate or equivalent who has completed formalized apprenticeship preferred.

  • Journeyman with a minimum of 5 years post apprenticeship bench experience.

  • Experience troubleshooting die and press problems.

  • Experience with rubber mold is a plus.

  • Knowledge of form, draw, and progressive tooling.

  • Ability to fabricate and debug new dies.

  • Knowledge of proper die build procedures, punch press equipment and metal forming processes.

  • Self-motivated individual with a positive attitude.

  • Team oriented individual with good communication skills.

  • Ability to work from verbal and written instructions.

  • Must be able to operate all equipment required to perform job functions.

  • Customer focused individual.

  • Proficient computer skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 40 pounds on a daily basis.

  • Ability to walk and move around, stoop, bend, and climb (ascend/descend) power lift truck platform.

  • Ability to stand for an eight-hour shift.

  • Ability to reach and grab with arms and hands, and manual dexterity to operate machines with precision.

  • Normal or corrected visions necessary to read directions, closely examine parts, and distinguish colors.

  • Ability to pull, lift, and transport dies on carts to and from various locations within the assigned location.
