This Machinist – Basic position will prepare you for entering in to the Prototyping and Tooling FCP 4-year apprentice training program. Prototyping and Tooling is responsible for the construction and maintenance of production tooling such as dies, fixtures, molds and gages as well as the fabrication of prototypes for new and revised parts which are used in the development of S&C products. In this position, you will learn how to effectively use standard Tool Room equipment such as manual lathes, mills, surface grinders, CNC Turning and VMC equipment to produce details used to build various types of tooling and / or prototypes per the Building 3 Machinist Basic Work Elements. You will be working closely with others during training and must have excellent communication skills and the ability to understand and follow instructions while working in a team environment. Upon successful completion of the Building 3 Machinist - Basic work elements and the Prototyping and Tooling - Basic elements you will move to the Prototyping and Tooling FCP to begin the next level of training. Upon completion of the 4-year training program, the applicant will be expected to be able to build, repair, and troubleshoot Basic level dies, fixtures, molds, or prototypes along with an assortment of other tools from assembly and detail drawings using standard tool room equipment as described above including Wire and Sinker EDM machines.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Successfully complete the required Building 3 Machinist - Basic work elements and the Prototyping and Tooling -Basic work elements within established training and proficiency guidelines.
Must be able to successfully complete the requirements of the Prototyping and Tooling four-year training program which includes three years of off-site TMA Related Theory Courses, a minimum of three, two month sessions in Tool Design as well as additional courses offered here at S&C.
Perform squaring and the placement of hole patterns to tooling details using both manual and CNC equipment.
Perform basic repairs to various types of tools with assistance from coworkers.
Proficiency with shop math, geometry, basic trigonometry, blueprint reading, hand tools and various measuring instruments such as scales, micrometers, dial calipers, height gages, etc.
Adherence to established safety practices and procedures.
Meet required quality standards for assignments.
Complete the Advanced Blueprint reading class during the1st year of training.
Complete the Advanced Shop Math class during the 2nd year of training.
To select this job as one of interest to you, at a minimum, you must have the following:
Successful completion of the following S&C Technical Training courses: Math 1, Blueprint Reading 1, GD&T, Introduction to Metrology, or equivalent classes.
Must be able to pass a basic trigonometry entrance exam.
Very good mechanical aptitude and problem solving skills.
Must be able to keep pace with the training program requirements.
Understand basic metal cutting principles. Basic machining skills are preferred.
Relevant Work Experience:
One year of relevant experience required.
